1 Executive summary

Bottom line: a clean, high 8-iron. 125 yds total, 122 carry, 93.5 mph ball speed, a 68-ft apex and a 43° landing that stopped the ball within 3 yds. Contact was solid: the ball is airborne within 1/30 s of impact.

The swing repeats his recent irons: smooth, connected takeaway, hips that hold their depth, and a finish held for ~3 seconds. The constant is here too: the head drops about 6 inches by impact, and the ball launches at 22°, about 4° higher than an LPGA 8-iron. That extra loft is why this 8-iron flies only ~6 yds past his 9-iron.

Strength

Solid, repeatable strike

Clean contact, balanced held finish, hips stable: the same reliable pattern as his 9-iron.

Priority 1

Stay tall

Keep the cap on its address line. The dip starts before the club reaches hip height.

Priority 2

Hands ahead

Hands over the lead thigh at impact to bring launch to ~18° and turn height into distance.

★ first 8-iron report, so these set the baseline. Club speed isn't on the screen: at a typical 8-iron smash of ~1.36–1.38, 93.5 mph of ball speed means about 68–69 mph. The curve direction isn't readable on the panel (both arrows look the same in the glare), so only its size is logged.

What it means: launch is high and ball speed is ~5 mph under the LPGA average, so the ball climbs, lands at 43° and stops fast (3 yds of roll). With the hands a little more ahead (launch ~18°) and the same swing speed, a realistic target is ~128–130 yds carry, right at the LPGA 8-iron.

3 Timing & tempo — measured from the video

30 frames per second, so each time is accurate to about ±0.03 s. Takeaway starts at ~30.15 s, the hands peak at ~30.58 s, the club reaches the top at ~30.65 s, and impact is at ~30.93 s.

GroupBackswingDownswingRatio
André (8-iron #1, Nov 4)~0.50 s~0.28 s~1.8:1
André (9-iron #1, Oct 28)~0.50 s~0.25 s~2:1
André (7-iron, Oct 14)~0.47 s~0.23 s~2:1
PGA Tour (Tour Tempo, "24/8")~0.80 s~0.27 s3:1

Tour figure: John Novosel, Tour Tempo.

What it means: the downswing speed is tour-like (0.28 s); the backswing is short and quick, as in all his irons. A slightly fuller, slower backswing (~0.6 s) would bring the ratio toward 2.5:1 and give the arms time to get the hands ahead at impact.

4 The reference frame — how this swing was measured

Reference frame
  • Grid: each square is about 5 inches (~7 px per inch at the golfer), scaled from his hip-to-ankle length, so treat distances as ±1–2 inches.
  • Vertical center line (light green): the head's address position. Horizontal lines: cap height (white) and hip height (light green) at address. The white box is the head at address.
  • Two corner diagonals (green): a fixed perspective scaffold for depth.
  • Paths: the red trail is the head and the yellow trail is the hands, frame by frame from address to impact. The red circle is the ball's address spot. In this frame (one after impact) the ball is already in the air, at hip height to the right.
  • Body points were tracked automatically on every frame (210 frames, 28.5–35.5 s), and head height was measured from the top of the cap, then checked by eye at each key position. The camera is fixed.

6 Position-by-position biomechanics

Club: 8-Iron, as named by André. Logged as report #1.

Photo 1 — Address Good

  • Athletic posture, weight centered, hands just ahead of the clubhead.
  • Ball a touch forward of center, a normal 8-iron spot.
  • He settles into the address gradually: the cap sinks about 3 in during the final second before takeaway.

Photo 2 — Takeaway Good

  • A connected start: hands, arms and chest move away together.
  • The head is already ~5 in lower than when he first set up and still sinking.

Photo 3 — Lead arm parallel Watch

  • Wide lead arm, club swinging up on plane.
  • The cap is now ~5–6 in below its address line: the dip happens early, the same pattern as his 9-iron and 6-iron.

Photo 4 — Top Good

  • Full shoulder turn, club near parallel at the top (~0.50 s backswing).
  • The head is ~3 in down and ~3½ in toward the ball versus address.
  • Hips keep their depth: no slide toward the ball.

Photo 5 — Arm parallel (down) Good

  • Hands drop in front of the chest as the lower body leads.
  • The head is already working back down toward the ball line.

Photo 6 — Impact Head down

  • Clubhead at the ball at ~30.93 s; one frame later the ball is gone.
  • The cap is ~6 in lower than at address, horizontally back on its address line.
  • Hips hold their depth (no early extension); hands ~2 in ahead of their address spot.

Photo 7 — Ball launched Good

  • The ball is already in the air, rising past hip height on a steep line (22° on the screen).
  • Airborne within 1/30 s of contact: a clean strike.

Photo 8 — Release Good

  • Arms extend toward the target and the chest keeps turning.
  • The head starts rising only after the ball is gone.

Photo 9 — Finish Excellent

  • Full, balanced finish, belt buckle to the target, trail toe up.
  • Held for about 3 seconds while he watches the ball land.

7 Where the 8-iron sits in the bag

ClubCarryTotalBall speedLaunch

7-Iron144 yds147 yds104 mph22°
8-Iron #1 (today)122 yds125 yds93.5 mph22°
9-Iron116 yds117 yds92.2 mph27°
Pitching Wedge (#3)113 yds115 yds89.2 mph28°

The picture is uneven: 22 yds from 7-iron to 8-iron, but only 6 yds from 8-iron to 9-iron and 3 yds to the wedge. The 8-iron's ball speed is only 1.3 mph above the 9-iron's, so today it behaved like a strong 9-iron. Getting the hands ahead (less added loft) should open the 8–9 gap to a healthy ~12 yds.

8 Diagnosis

  1. Head dip (~6 in): it starts while he is still settling at address and keeps going in the first quarter of the backswing. It adds loft and explains the 22° launch.
  2. Hips hold depth: no early extension, the same strength seen in his 9-iron and recent 6-irons.
  3. Tempo ~1.8:1: quick, smooth and repeatable, with a tour-speed downswing.
  4. Contact: clean; the flight numbers and the frame-by-frame launch confirm it.

9 Next steps — keep it simple

1

Cap on the line

Set up, then freeze the cap height before you start back: no sinking in the last second of address. 10 slow swings, then full speed.

2

Hands ahead

Feel the hands over the lead thigh at impact. Target: 17–19° launch with the same speed.

3

8 vs 9 check

Hit 5 balls with each and compare carries. Aim for a ~12-yd gap; it shows the loft is coming from the club, not the body.

10 Limitations & next capture

Confidence: high on ball flight (range screen) and tempo (frame by frame), moderate on head and hip distances.
